Behind the name
The restaurant was named after artist, author and avid angler George Coates, a man who spent half his life identifying and drawing the colourful reef fish of North Queensland.
After his death in 1980 his widow, Jean Valentine Coates, donated a permanent record of his works to the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE; known then as the Townsville College of Technical and Further Education.
To commemorate this distiguished citizen of Townsville and his life work, the restaurant appropriately received its name and is proud to display many of Mr Coates' work for patrons to admire as they dine.
