Partnerships with universities

Due to the high standard of TAFE Queensland programs, and the fact that they are Nationally Accredited Qualifications, students successful in completing a Diploma at the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE International may obtain up to one year of credit towards an undergraduate degree at most Australian Universities. This may depend on the electives that you have taken for your diploma, and also the options that you are selecting for your University program.

TAFE study is an excellent means of meeting academic 'Foundation Year' requirements set by universities for Bachelor Degree programs, particularly for students coming from those countries where the entry requirements state "Satisfactory completion of one year study at a higher education institution or equivalent".

The Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE has specific agreements with a number of Australian universities including the James Cook University (JCU) with campuses in Townsville, Brisbane and Cairns. James Cook University currently credit Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE Diploma graduates with up to 12 months of their bachelor degree programs in the following areas:

The Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE International is able to 'package' programs for international students to include, for example, English Studies (at JCU English Language Centre), a Diploma at Barrier Reef, Institute of TAFE and a degree at James Cook University, with only 1 Student Visa being required for the total period of study.

In recent times the partnership between Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE and James Cook University has strengthened considerably; both institutions see considerable merit in the process of an International student (particularly from a non-English speaking background) studying initially at TAFE and then articulating on to James Cook University. The smaller and more intimate TAFE environment is an excellent pathway for the international student to become accustomed to the Australian language, way of life, and culture.

The academic results for International Students undertaking this pathway have been particularly successful at both the TAFE and University levels. The International Student is particularly well prepared for University after 12 - 18 months of TAFE studies, and will also have had the opportunity to improve his/her English while studying in a much smaller classroom environment, as the English language requirements for TAFE Certificate and Diploma qualifications are lower than those of University programs.
