English language requirements
The language of instruction at the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE is English. Students must be able to demonstrate a suitable level of English language proficiency before being admitted to a program.
For international students whose first language is not English, the required minimum English language levels can be one of the following:

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - General Test

Diploma Program: Score of 5.5 (with no individual band score less than 5.0) or 6.0 (Diploma of Nursing)

Certificate Program: Score of 5.5 (with no individual band score less than 5.0) or 6.0 (Certificate 3 Aged Care)

Note: For many countries, it is now mandatory that the applicant completes an IELTS test prior to being issued with a Student Visa.

English Language Induction Program
With effect as from Semester 1 2008, all International students will be required to attend a one week (20 hours) "International Induction Program". This will be conducted prior to the commencement of each semester and will include such topics as Activity and Assignment format and writing. The cost of this program is in addition to the Course fee and will be A$300.00. This program includes Literacy Support for each new student of 2 hours a week for the Student's first semester with Barrier Reef Institute TAFE.
JCU - English Language Centre
In February 2007 the James Cook University English Language Centre (JCU-ELC) opened its doors to International Students wishing to study either General English or English for Academic Purposes. The JCU-ELC is located conveniently within the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE City Campus.
Student Visas can be 'packaged' to include English Language studies and an Institute program both on the one visa. Contact the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE for further information.
