Academic requirements

In order to enter a Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE Diploma program, students must have successfully completed Queensland Year 12 or an acceptable equivalent.

To enter a Certificate program, students are required to have successfully completed Year 10 or an acceptable equivalent. For Assessment Level 4 countries, it is necessary to hold the equivalent of Queensland Year 12.

For a list of acceptable overseas educational levels and qualifications acceptable for admission into formal programs, refer to the Students Country Equivalent Guide (PDF 18kb).

In February 2007 the James Cook University English Language Centre (JCU-ELC) opened its doors to International Students wishing to study either General English or English for Academic Purposes. The JCU-ELC is located conveniently within the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE City Campus. Commencing in February 2009, JCU-ELC will be registered to undertake IELTS testing in Townsville.

Student Visas can be 'packaged' to include English Language studies and an Institute program (and even a James Cook University degree) all on the one visa. Contact the Barrier Reef Institute of TAFE for further information on how we can assist you.

With effect as from Semester 1 2008, all International Students will be required to attend a one week (20 hours) "International Induction Program". This will be conducted prior to the commencement of each semester and will include such topics as Activity and Assignment format and writing. The cost of this program is in addition to the Course fee and will be A$300.00. This program includes Literacy Support for each new student of 2 hours a week for the Student's first semester with Barrier Reef TAFE.

Further information on the JCU English Language Centre can be obtained at www.jcu-elc.net.au  or by emailing James Cook University.
